Butterfly has had an issue with her name for almost six months now. Just after Christmas, she decided that she wanted to be named Brittany Spears. That is all fine and good, but I didn't really want her looking up to Brittany Spears as a role model. I don't want the girls to dress like her, or act like her, or chew gum and talk at the same time like her... (did anyone see her interview on CNN?)
I told Butterfly that when she grows up, she can change her name to anything she wants but for now, I'll call her Butterfly. Somehow, she twisted that around until she believed that only grown ups could be named Brittany. For the longest time, I would hear "Mom, when I grow up, you will have to call me Brittany, cuz that's my real name."
A month or two ago, Bleu got some postcards from Angie's family. Her daughter, Brittany, had written a wonderful letter and drawn a picture of herself. You could practically see the wheels turning in Butterfly's head.
Butterfly: (Pointing to Angie's Brittany) That Brittany Spears isn't grown up.
Me: Her name isn't Brittany Spears, it is just Brittany.
Butterfly: Is she a little girl?
Me: Not a little, little girl. She is as old as Mica.
Butterfly: (thinking) Does she have sisters?
Me: Yes.
Butterfly: Does she have friends?
Me: I'm sure she does.
Butterfly: Then I am going to be a sister-friend Brittany too!
Whenever she remembered to correct us, we were politely told that her name was not Butterfly. It was Sister-Friend Brittany. This lasted until just a few days ago.
Butterfly: Mom. I have decided I am not Sister-Friend Brittany.
Me: I am so glad. I like you being Butterfly.
Butterfly: Oh, I'm not Butterfly. I am all grown up now. You can call me 'Brittany WITH the Spears'.
LOL... I tried to play along
Me: Butterfly. I mean Brittany. Can you come here?
Butterfly: (Giving me a withering look) I am 'Brittany WITH the Spears'!
